OLD BAY Celebrates 70th with New Twists on Classic Recipes Perfect for Summer

Hunt Valley, MD – June 2009 – If there was an official taste of summer, it would no doubt belong to OLD BAY® Seasoning. For seventy years, the unique blend of 12 herbs and spices has been adding a distinctive, zesty flavor to favorite dishes; from seafood, chicken and salads to corn-on-the-cob and more. A seasoning that once belonged solely to the Chesapeake Bay area, OLD BAY is now shared enthusiastically from coast to coast.  Who would have imagined that a regional spice product would turn into such a phenomenon, all through the passion and word of mouth of its followers.

To celebrate its 70th anniversary, OLD BAY is spicing things up by introducing twists on classic dishes that offer great new ways to enjoy the bold seasoning and are reminiscent of decades past. Take a favorite from the 1950s like the OLD BAY Salmon Loaf – which used canned salmon and was baked in a loaf pan. Now with fresh salmon being a top seafood choice among Americans, it takes center stage with OLD BAY’s Ultimate Sweet & Spicy Grilled Salmon.

Another classic dish is OLD BAY’s Steamed Shrimp. Taking this entertaining favorite a step further, OLD BAY created its Zesty Shrimp Bruschetta – a perfect appetizer for any summer gathering. One more timeless recipe is OLD BAY’s Spiced Cocktail Sauce, which has since evolved from the perfect dip for shrimp into OLD BAY’s Party Dip with a Zip – a cool, new and refreshing dip used with crackers, veggies, and lots more.

OLD BAY® Ultimate Sweet and Spicy Grilled Salmon
Prep Time: 5 min. | Cook Time: 10 min. | Makes: 4 servings

Very reminiscent of the era, a popular recipe found on the OLD BAY can in the 1950’s was the Classic Salmon Loaf, which used canned salmon and – you guessed it – was baked in a loaf pan.  But today, OLD BAY is celebrating a new way to enjoy your salmon with an easy spice rub.

1 tablespoon firmly packed brown sugar  
1 tablespoon OLD BAY® Seasoning   
1 pound salmon fillets  


1. Mix brown sugar and OLD BAY in small bowl.  Brush salmon lightly with oil.  Rub generously with seasoning mixture. 
2. Grill over medium-high heat 8 minutes per inch of thickness or until fish flakes easily with a fork.

Test Kitchen Tip:  OLD BAY® Rub may be substituted for the OLD BAY® Seasoning and brown sugar.

Add a Chesapeake-flavored twist to an Italian classic. Shrimp makes bruschetta betta!

1 pound cooked shrimp, finely chopped
1 plum tomato, finely chopped
2 tablespoons finely chopped green onion
2 teaspoons olive oil
1 egg white
2 teaspoons OLD BAY® Seasoning   
1/4 teaspoon McCormick® Garlic Powder   
1 loaf French bread  
2 tablespoons mayonnaise  


1. Mix shrimp, tomato, green onion, olive oil, egg white, OLD BAY and garlic powder in medium bowl until well blended.  

2. Slice bread into 24 (1/2-inch thick) slices.  Place on baking sheet; broil until lightly toasted on both sides.  Spread lightly with mayonnaise.  Spoon shrimp mixture evenly over bread slices.  

3. Bake in preheated 350°F oven 8 to 10 minutes or until heated through and lightly browned.

OLD BAY® Party Dip with a Zip
                 Prep Time: 5 min. | Refrigerate: 1 hour | Makes: 2 1/2 cups or 20 (2-tablespoon) servings

A quick, creamy dip for all occasions. For a colorful presentation, serve this refreshing dip in a hollowed bell pepper.

1 pint (16 ounces) sour cream  
1/2 cup mayonnaise  
1/4 cup sliced green onions 
1 tablespoon OLD BAY® Seasoning   
Assorted cut-up fresh vegetables, crackers and/or chips


1. Mix sour cream, mayonnaise, green onions and OLD BAY in medium bowl until well blended.  Cover. 

2. Refrigerate at least 1 hour to blend flavors.  Serve with assorted cut-up fresh vegetables, crackers and/or chips.
